The Geek Girls

Kate Kotler – Founding Editor

Kate is a freelance journalist and marketing hack-for-hire from Chicago.  When she was in college, the late Ed Bradley told Kate “never be afraid to chase a story,” (after she chased him down a hallway following a speaking engagement in search of a quote for her school paper).  She follows his advice to this day and since has interviewed a ton of awesome individuals:

  • Neil Gaiman – if you’re reading this site you better know who Neil Gaiman is!
  • Charlaine Harris – author of the Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire Series (aka True Blood)
  • Jonathan Ross – late night presenter (Friday Night with Jonathan Ross) and Turf creator.
  • Christian Finnegan – comedian for hire (having appeared on VH1′s Best Week Ever, Comedy Central Premium Blend, Countdown with Keith Olbermann and Chappelle’s Show – amongst others).
  • Kari Byron – host of Head Rush and member of the Build Team on Mythbusters
  • Gail Simone – writer for such comic classics as Birds of Prey, The Secret Six, Wonder Woman, Welcome to Tranquility and more.
  • Hope Larson – cartoonist and writer of Gray Horses, Chiggers, Mercury and an upcoming graphic adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time.
  • Anthony Del Col, Connor McCreery and Andy Belanger – the creators of Kill Shakespeare from IDW.
  • Joe Harris – writer and creator of Ghost Projekt from Oni Press.
  • Marc Andreyko – writer of Pantheon, Manhunter and Torso.
  • Leah Peterson – creative maven, writer and consultant on The United States of Tara.
  • Janina Gavankar – awesome geeky actress whose resume includes important roles on  The L-Word and Dollhouse.
  • Brittney Powell – lead actress in Safety Geeks: SVI.
  • Heather Gold – comedian and queer activist.
  • Jessica Halem – comedian and queer activist, also!
  • Ms. Bees Knees – femme fatal and assassin for hire (thankfully she’s a chum of Kate’s)!
  • Julie Michelle – photographer and creator of the I Live Here: SF project.
  • Stuart Schuffman, aka Broke-Ass Stuart – broke-ass travel writer.

Kate is a self-proclaimed “Doctor Who expert,” and thinks the most romantic gift she ever got was a copy of the Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia.  Her most prized possession is a stuffed animal her uncle Mike gave her when she was four.

Currently Kate is a paid freelance writer for Demand Studios and you can read her geeky musings on Attention Deficit Delirium, Girly GeekdomBitchBuzz, DollyMix, Brokeass Stuart’s Goddamn WebsiteFray: A Quarterly of True Stories and RealMental.org.

In addition, Kate is excited and exceptionally proud to be an ongoing contributor to Leah Peterson’s brand new magazine: Creative Humans.

Candice Dayoan – Contributing Editor

Candice describes herself as a “geek of all trades” – part artist, part techie. After graduating from the University of Hawai’i she worked on the second season of Lost.  She has also had her artwork featured on Dante’s Cove. Candice enjoyed two and a half years working with hot user generated review website Yelp, before she combined her passion for politics with her geekiness, taking a volunteer position for a year as the Deputy New Media Director for Organizing for America – California and is currently officially on staff as a Regional Field Director in Northern California for OFA.

Kim Slotterback-Hoyum — Contributing writer

Kim is a Michigan-based freelance writer who spends more time than is reasonable playing video games. She owns nearly every video game system currently on the market and is thrilled to actually be able to justify that fact by writing about games for GGotS. Other than writing and gaming, she loves reading, music and taking classic road trips, the kind with deep-fried cheese on a stick and the world’s tallest wooden Indian.

Shannon Quinn — Contributing writer

Shannon has always been a geeky writer. From her earliest days writing Pokemon fan fiction in the third grade, to middle school when she cosplayed Sailor Mars (don’t bother looking for the photos, she’s burned them!), to the present day which she spends geekily obsessing over YouTube vloggers and zipping around in her 2003 Suzuki Aerio “Zuzu” (after the nickname given to Prince Zuko from Avatar: the Last Air Bender). When not working for “The Man”, Shannon writes the blog The ShannQ and works on her first novel, Casimir Pulaski Day (which she hopes to publish soon).
