Geek List: NKOTB breaks Twitter, our buddy Sonia featured on Curry Bear and Geek Girl Con

By Kate Kotler

  • File this under “Who Knew They Still Had the ‘Right Stuff’?” – Apparently the news that the New Kids on the Block would be hosting a Carnival Cruise May 12-16, 2011 was enough of a trending topic on Twitter today that it crashed the site for a good two hours.  I don’t know if I should laugh, shake my head or go dig out some acid washed jeans and a neon-pink t-shirt and buy tix for the cruise… Oh, the 90s.
  • Our friend (and former Geek of the Week) Sonia Hunt is on her way to world domination via a smart and sassy cooking show. Proof? She was featured in an interview on Curry Bear this week… Go, Sonia!
  • What’s this about a Geek Girl Con in 2011? Started by Wendy Lady (aka @NerdRage42) as an inspired Twitter hashtag concept born out of the energy gained at the SDCC Geek Girl Tweetup/Geek Girls Exist panel, Geek Girl Con is now growing into a real-honest-to-god-con being organized by some of the geekiest and coolest girls (and guys) we know!  Huzzah!  If you’re interested in volunteering for this con or being placed onto the mailing list, shoot us an email at geekgirlonthestreet@gmail.com – as Editor Kate is the “Online Maven” for the con and is developing a mailing list/online forum/etc. for participants. You can also follow news of the con via #GeekGirlCon or by following us on Twitter @GeekGirlCon !!
  • GGotS would like to officially welcome our four new Interns: Dina Kay, Sarah Elliott, Katie Doyle and Kylee Lane. Please check out their bios on the Geek Girls page and follow their blogs/Twitter accounts, etc!

    Hurray GeekGirlCon 2011!

There’s also a FB page for those who tweet less and creep more. We try update it whenever possible with useful info.

So boybands do have special powers. I always suspected something.. How else can all those record sales be explained.

Point #1 makes me laugh (points #2-4 congratulations!). I’m a geek girl who also loves New Kids on the Block and was probably also responsible for that crash. But in my defense, I leaked news of the cruise announcement early so those tweets should have been staggered throughout the week. I know how crazy us fans can get. This isn’t the first time we broke twitter, hell they even named a server after Donnie Wahlberg. Although being a geek in this NK world has given me some interesting insight into mass hysteria and its effect on social media channels – stuff that can be used in times of crisis and need.

So happy to happen on this site and am excited to hear about #GeekGirlCon. I’ll be keeping an eye out (just don’t schedule it same weekend as the NK Cruise, please.) In case you’re wondering what makes me a geek – mostly technology and it should go without saying that I love sci-fi.
