Comic Con Wrap-up: The best and weirdest of our lost geek weekend

Brian PosehnBy Kate Kotler

Comic Con International 2010 is quickly coming to an end and droves of geeks are packing up and heading back to their regular lives, out of San Diego and back into the four corners of the world.

Typically we like to do a small press, alt/indie wrap-up for each con we cover.  However, San Diego Comic Con really isn’t the place for small, indie published books (they’re here, but they’re far out shone by the mass media programming).  Hopefully, that will change in years to come, just like the geek girl programming has taken more promenence in 2010, we hope that in years to come there is more of a spotlight on alt press.

So for our wrapup this year, I’m going to share with you the best and weirdest moments we’ve experienced down here in San Diego in the Year of the Geek Girl:

  • Holy cow, we met a ton of famous people! (Check out our Flickr Comic Con set for pics!!)  Eugene Mirman, Brian Posehn, Kristin Schaal, Veronica Belmont, Kari Byron, Grant Imahara, Thomas Lennon (with his wife and baby), Britney Powell, Charlaine Harris, Marian Call, Stephanie Thorpe and Taryn O’Neill are among the celebs we saw, met and chatted with this weekend.
  • Meeting up with amazing Geek Girls! This weekend we met up with our online geek girl friends Jennifer Stuller, Kylee Lane, Bonnie Burton, Kristin Rielly, Physicist Lisa, Katie Doyle, Amy Ratcliffe, Pamela the Discriminating Fangirl and so many more awesome women… Not to mention, meeting Debbie Myers (Science Channel president)!!  It was empowering to be surrounded by so much she-geek energy.
  • Mythbusters tweeted our URL for our interview with Kari Byron and the site metrics went through the roof!  We have a ton of new readers here this weekend (*waves hello*) whom I hope will stick around to enjoy our geeky girly content.
  • Cross posts and collaboration! Kate and Doc Simian put together a Geek Girl Gallery for Attention Deficit Delirium (better known as the ADD Blog) and Bryan Reesman (the publisher) let us know that it was the #1 post for Saturday.  Kate also cross posted a bunch of content to our UK geek sisters, Girly Geekdom, including an exclusive interview with Jennifer Stuller.
  • Joe Harris from Oni Press

  • Meetinup with old friends! We got a chance to hang out with Ethan Kaye, Anthony Del Col, Conor McCreery (aka, Adam Savage’s stunt double) and Andy Belanger on Thursday night for dinner and drinks.  We ran into Marc Andreyko, Joe Harris and Cory Casoni a couple of times, but they were both so busy that we didn’t get much of a chance to chat.  It’s really nice, after you’ve been covering these big pop culture events for a while you develop friendships with people you see over and over again… you look for them at every show then.  It becomes a bonding experience for you, them and your crew.
  • Panels: We were so slammed that we really only got to go to two or three panels.  However, the panels we did attend (Divas and Golden Lassoes, Oni Panelmonium, Geek Girls Exist and the Quantum Leap retrospective) were great!

And, now for the weirdest moment:

  • Two fans got into an altercation over a seat in Hall H (for those of you who’ve not been to SDCC, Hall H is where all the super big, hard to get into programming happens).  One fan apparently STABBED THE OTHER IN THE EYE with a lightsaber pen.  As reports developed, it turned out that the stabee’s injury wasn’t as serious as alluded to initally.  The stabber, however, is still in some serious doo-doo.  This gets filed under WTF?!? in our books, as a geek con is the last place you’d think that violence would erupt.  Check out the perp walk video posted on YouTube:

Well, true believers – that’s it from us down in San Diego!  We’re heading back to our respective homes this afternoon and (honestly) we probably won’t have a post up tomorrow, as we’ll all be sleeping in.  Keep tuned to our site as we’ll be posting some pretty cool Geeks of the Week interviews in the coming month based on people we’ve met this weekend.

Stay Geeky!
Kate, Eden and Doc Simian

Thanks for all the great coverage. I might have to brave the crowds next year.

    • adorkablegrrl says:

You should! I don’t think I’m going to make Wondercon or APE next year, so Comic Con will probs be my only time on the West Coast. I could even see fit to register you as a GGotS photographer/videographer if you wanted — that way you could contribute to our Flickr stream — which is so very important during cons like this…

      Chat about this later?

  2. Stan Kehoe says:

Any confirmation that it was actually a light sabre pen?

    • adorkablegrrl says:

No not as of yet, though that was the common assessment in the press room.

      • Stan Kehoe says:

The kind of pen used is what could turn this from a good story to a great story. If it was just a crappy Bic pen, so what. But if it was a Thor pen or Capt. America, or light sabre; that’s awesome. I’m hoping smokinggun.com gets the police report so we can find out about the pen and other details.

  3. Great coverage, you guys! I’m going to do everything in my power to go to Comic Con next year. Definitely doing APE this year so I can cover that for you toos =)

Excited, you guys have really outdone yourselves. I’m so happy for the site.

  4. adorkablegrrl says:

@Stan – I agree. I’ve been told by multiple sources that it was a lightsaber pen, though I don’t know how full of it those multiple sources are…

However, you should note that #ComicCon is now being called #StabbyCon and you can buy a funny t-shirt from my gal Wendy (aka @nerdrage42) on her site: http://www.geekyboutiquey.com/
    :)
