GGotS Review: Ugly Americans on Comedy Central

By Kate Kotler

Imagine a world in which “illegal alien” meant not only peoples from other countries, but also demons, zombies, vampires, wizards, robots, anthropomorphic animals, and the odd alien from outer space…

This is the world of Ugly Americans, a new cartoon series on Comedy Central.  The show cleverly posits post-9/11 paranoia against the question of “What would INS have to deal with if aliens meant ALIENS?”

The premier episode of Ugly Americans introduces us to Mark Lilly, an overworked, underpaid, bleeding-heart DOI (Department of Integration) social worker trying to prep aliens, monsters, and robots for the exam to obtain citizenship in America.  If you think that normal social work is hard, imagine Mark’s struggle contending with his hellspawn boss and covert lover, Callie (in the premier she takes him to Hell to meet her dad), zombie roommate Randall, and other less-kind members of DOI who want to “exterminate” aliens…

Whether the show will hold up to the promise of the first episode is yet to be seen.  However, with promises of missing zombie penises, alien babies, American Warewolfs in America, and a variety of other bizarre creature-meets-NYC melting-pot topics yet to be played out, Ugly Americans demands further watching…at least through episode three.

Ugly Americans – 10:30/9:30 central — Following South Park on Wednesdays — Comedy Central…

I’m glad you reviewed this! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the commercials. I hope it’s another primetime cartoon to add to the list =)

It was kinda slow paced in places, but I thought it overall was very funny and had a lot of potential… we’ll see. :)

  2. Bethany says:

This sounds like something I have to dip into as well… just to see. Could add to my ADULT cartoon line up. With kidlings around we have cartoons they CAN see and others they can’t. Ha!

  3. I agree–pretty entertaining. Hope it holds on.
