Valentine’s Day special: 5 Geek couples we love

February 10, 2010

Compiled by Kate Kotler

#1 Gina Torres and Laurence Fishburne

Gina is best known for playing Zoe the hot “warrior woman” who is second in command on Serenity in Joss Whedon’s space-western epic, Firefly: Sydney Bristow’s nemisis Anna Espinosa on Alias: Cas in two Matrix movies: and, she’s made appearances on 24, Angel, Xena, FlashForward, the Vampire Diaries and is slated to play Super Woman in the upcoming Justice League television show in 2010.  She is sci-fi geek gold and is firmly lodged in the mental “spank bank” of geeky guys everywhere.  Hubby Larry is equally as geeky being known best for being – uh – MORPEHUS (character based off of uber geek N.G.’s Sandman) in the Matrix movies and Cowboy Curtis on the kitchy geek classic Pee Wee’s Playhouse.  Together they represent serious geek cred and the potential power to rule the universe.  Not to mention they make a super cute couple…

#2 David Tennant and Kate Kotler, uh… Georgia Moffett

We suppose if DT had to date someone (OTHER than our GGotS Editor – Ms. Kate)  Georgia Moffett was a good choice…  David just wrapped up three years as the epic Time Lord, the Doctor on the long-running sci fi series Doctor Who.  Georgia has not only appeared on that series (The Doctor’s Daughter, Series 4 – 2008) – IRL she is actually the daughter of a Time Lord.  (Georgia’s Dad is Peter Davidson – known best for being a celery wearing, cricket playing incarnation of the very same Doctor on the very same long running sci fi series.)  The DT/GM relationship does seem a little weird and incestious — dating the daughter of the dude who played you after she played your daughter… just sayin’.  None the less, they too are a serious geek power couple, with a legacy of sci fi goodness betwixt them.

#3 Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman

She = half of a Brechtian punk caberet duo known as the awesomeness which is The Dresden Dolls.  He = a paragon of sci fi, fantasy and graphic novels.  They = the CUTEST f-ing geek couple in the world!!!  Said Amanda via Twitter on New Year’s Day, “I might have told Neil I would marry him, but I also might have been drunk.”  Fifteen days later, on Neil’s blog, an “official” annoucement: “Dear World, we are going to get married.  Signed, Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman

Our response?

Dear Amanda and Neil,

Congratulations!  That’s awesome… you are the cutest couple and we all love you!

Signed,

The GGotS Team & Readers

#4 George Takei and Brad Altman

In 2005, George Takei, (best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in the orginal Star Trek series and movies) came out of the closet and revealed that he was gay.  Since he has been a champion for queer rights and one of the loudest, proudest gay men in Hollywood.  In 2008, Takei wed his partner of 18 years, Brad Altman during the all-too brief time in which same-sex marriage was legal in California.  We <3 them.

#5 Justin Long and Drew Barrymore

Aside from being “Mac, aka the Apple Guy” in the brilliant Mac vs. PC commericals opposite of comedian John Hodgeman – Justin Long is a total dorky improviser/sketch comedian/stand-up comic dude.  Notably he has had roles in Dodgeball: An Underdog’s Story, Funny People, Galaxy Quest (!!!), Pineapple Express, Youth in Revolt, Zack and Miri Make a Porno… the list goes on.  Drew Barrymore is… well… Drew Barrymore.  She’s one of the biggest dorks around (and we love her for it!)  Somehow this couple just makes complete sense to us.  And, we’re glad that they think so, too.

My friend would probably want me to point out that Gina Torres was also in Cleopatra 2525.

My favorite geek couples (comic book edition): Hope Larson and Bryan Lee O’Malley (Look! Adorable!) and Raina Telgmeier and Dave Roman (Super bonus geekiness — Raina and Dave dressed as Ponyo and Sosuke from Miyazaki’s Ponyo).

OMG – I can’t believe I FORGOT Hope and Bryan!!! They are the most super cutie-patootie comic couple ever (and, Hope is a wonderful person, I had the great pleasure of interviewing her at Comic Con for my Women to Watch column on BitchBuzz — and, I’ll be reviewing some of her upcoming work for this site — which I’m totes stoked for!!)

I 100% agree with both your choices, Eden — this is sooo why you’re the 2nd in command for this site!!!

I know you know of Hope — I didn’t think you were leaving her out intentionally. I just think she’s adorable (and her comics are great) that I’m always happy to mention her.

I think she’s awesome, too! I can’t wait until she announces her “super secret” 2010/2011 project — I know what it is and I’m bursting at the seams to a.) see it, b.) tell everyone how FANTASTIC it is going to be… :)

She’s been a big supporter of this site via Twitter, etc. I really value her feedback and am really lucky to have an ongoing dialogue with her since we met at Comic Con. She’s fantastic!

Oooh, you have to tell me (secretly!) what it is. I’ve had my own theories, but I’m sure they’re wrong.
