Preview: Ghost Projekt from Oni Press
The first issue of Ghost Projekt, a new limited series from Oni Press, isn’t out until next month, but that gives you just enough time to get excited about it.
In remote Siberia, a mysterious Cold-War era weapon has been stolen. American weapons inspector Will Haley and Russian agent Anya Romanova are both looking for it. Neither know — or at least, neither admit — to exactly what danger this weapon may possess.
The first issue raises only questions, but provides an intriguing set up. What’s the nature of this mysterious weapon? What are the strange wounds that appeared on the project’s director? Does Anya know more than she’s saying? The creepy mood filters through the entire first issue and will no doubt only get more and more strange as the story continues.
Written by comic book veteran and horror screenwriter Joe Harris and with art by Queen & Country’s Steve Rolston, the first issue moves quickly. Harris’ writing is snappy and fast-paced and Rolston’s art is sharp and dynamic. While I’m not a big horror fan, I do enjoy supernatural stories. Everything about this comic worked for me and I’m more excited than I expected to see where all of this is going.
The ultra-cool Anya and the eager Will no doubt will be at odds with each other — they’re not enemies, but they’re not quite working with each other, either. While they only appear in the last half of the first issue, their characters are instantaneously clear and I want to know more about both of them and they make a great core for this title. I am probably biased toward such things, but Anya seems like she has the makings of an awesome heroine. I’m also sure Will is going to grow quite a bit and lose some of his naivety.
I am only disappointed that I’ve now read the first issue so I have to wait until April to find out what is going to happen next. Even though it’s only going to be five issues, I think the overall idea and characters have great potential.
If you want to find out more, Oni’s kindly provided a 13-page preview and check out the interview with writer Harris at BloodyDisgusting.com. And then immediately start counting down the days until this comic comes out. You will love this comic. I know I did.

I am also excited to see the second issue of this series. I have to say, I <3 the peeps at Oni… they're amongst my favorites.
I think this title is going to be HUGE for 2010. At least, it should be.
Oni never disappoints.
I know, that’s why I <3 them. I'm fairly picky about comics/graphic novels and I have to say that anytime I read something from Oni I end up spending $$ on series/etc. Not to mention they're super nice people. Je t'aime.
